Anxiousness and The Body – Part 1

The Ageless Wisdom has been around for ages (all pun intended). From the days of Hermes and Patañjali to Pythagoras and Hypatia, The Ageless Wisdom has been passed down from era to era to support people to access a deeper and richer understanding of life.

In a similar approach to many during the Renaissance period who explored how modern and pre-modern philosophy could be applied to the thinking of the times, this course will offer a scholarly exploration of the teachings of The Ageless Wisdom, seeing where they sit in relation to our modern-day era.

With anxiety disorders being estimated to affect millions of people worldwide, and stress and stress related conditions causing havoc on our bodies, our productivity, and economics now is the time for us to consider how the religious and philosophical approaches of The Ageless Wisdom can offer us insights into how it is that we can approach feelings of anxiousness and begin to enrich our everyday lives?

Presented by Martin Gladman, counsellor and student of religion and philosophy (see bio below), this four-week course will cover topics relating to anxiousness and the body.  From the nervous system to the heart, the brain to the stomach, this course makes up the first part of a two-part series on anxiousness and the body.

What does The Ageless Wisdom have to say about the body?  Can it enrich our lives to support us when approaching experiences relating to stress and anxiety? Come and join us as we review what modern science has published and what The Ageless Wisdom shares when exploring topics relating to anxiousness and the body.

Session 1 | Introduction to the Body ~ Thursday, 3 November 2022

The body is a beautiful and complex formation that has been studied, worshipped and feared throughout history, be it in science, religion or philosophy. But what exactly is the body? Is it simply just tissue and water, formed in different fashions to function as a suit for us to move around in? Or is it a highly intelligent and sophisticated tool that we can use to understand ourselves and the world around us?

As the introductory session to Part 1 of this two part course, we explore how it is that we can be inspired by the various functions of the body and use this intelligence to help us make supportive adjustments to our lives. With a focus on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, we will begin to explore how the body is viewed via the energetic and philosophical lenses of The Ageless Wisdom and how this may enrich our lives and understandings of anxiousness.

Session 2 | Avoidance, The Brain and Our Perceptions ~ Thursday, 10 November 2022

The brain is a fascinating and complex organ in the body that controls everything from thoughts, memories, motor skills, vision, breathing to temperature and more.  As an organ it receives information and processes this, sending signals throughout the body which also provides us with our perceptions of situations, be they in the past, in the present or in the future.

Taking the energetic and philosophical approaches offered by The Ageless Wisdom, this session will explore how we can be inspired by the function of the brain and consider how we can begin to sort through and make sense of situations so that we are left feeling empowered and strong, supporting us not to avoid or withdraw from situations which can leave us feeling lost in anxiousness.

Session 3 | The Heart, The Flight, The Freeze & Our Foundations ~ Thursday, 17 November

The heart is one of our most vital organs. It is positioned at the centre of our circulation system, cleansing and pumping blood around the body assuring that oxygen and nutrients are abundant whilst unwanted waste is removed. In many ways the heart takes care of us by always keeping us on track, literally providing us with the beat of life, constantly working to assure that the best of us is moved and that we’re free of any poisons.

This session looks at how we can be inspired by the function of the heart and how utilising the energetic and philosophical approaches offered by The Ageless Wisdom we can examine what may be at the centre of our lives and how its movements can relate to anxiousness and the body. Are we moving love, care and appreciation for ourselves and others, or are we moving something different?

Session 4 | Spleen, Cycles & The Body ~ Thursday, 24 November

In a very basic sense, the role of the spleen in the body is to cleanse, store and sort through our blood, filtering what does and does not belong, keeping our blood fresh and nourished in the body.  The spleen also supports our immune system, detecting aspects that do not belong, helping to eradicate them from the body before they become a nuisance.

This session looks at how we can be inspired by the function of the spleen and how by utilising the energetic and philosophical approaches offered by The Ageless Wisdom we may learn more about how we can approach life. Just as the spleen sorts through our blood, we too can sort through our lives and start to identify what does and does not belong, making choices on what to keep that supports us and letting go of what does not.

This session completes Part 1 of this course, and will offer an overview of what has been presented thus far, summarising our current understandings of anxiousness and the body and how we can implement relevant changes into our lives from what has been learned.
