Anxiousness and The Body – Part 2

For something to be ageless, it means that it is not of age, meaning that it is never old nor never new but ever present.  Throughout the ages, we have seen the appearance of The Ageless Wisdom come in and out of vogue. From the days of Hermes and Patañjali to Pythagoras and Hypatia, The Ageless Wisdom has always been there, waiting to be accessed to deepen and enrich our understanding of life.

In an approach akin to those in the Renaissance period, this course will explore how modern and pre-modern philosophy relates to the topic of anxiousness and the body offering a scholarly exploration of the teachings of The Ageless Wisdom.

With anxiety disorders being estimated to affect millions of people worldwide, and stress and stress-related conditions causing havoc on our bodies, our productivity and economics, now is the time for us to consider what the religious and philosophical approaches of The Ageless Wisdom can offer us in how it is that we can approach experiences of the body.

Presented as the second part in this series, Anxiousness and the Body – Part 2 will again explore what The Ageless Wisdom has to say about anxiousness and the body, utilising the body’s wisdom to support and enrich our understandings and approaches.

Presented by Martin Gladman, counsellor and student of religion and philosophy (see bio below), this four-week course will cover topics relating to the digestive system, endocrine system and more, offering another spectacular course from the College of Universal Medicine.

Session 1 | Accepting and Digesting Life ~ 8 June

Digestion is the process whereby we take a substance and break it down into smaller components, some of which enrich the body and others which are discarded, allowing us to move on to what is next. As a system, it can communicate much that we can learn from, not only about our bodies but how we can approach life. Exploring the practical role that digestion plays in the body this session will look beyond food and fluids, examining the many aspects of life we need to accept, digest, and let go of, considering how this may relate to our experiences of anxiousness.

Session 2 | Commitment, Purpose and The Dual Roles of the Pancreas ~ 15 June

Two of the main functions of the pancreas are to make juices that support the digestion of food and to make hormones like insulin and glucagon to help balance out blood sugars in the body. Although it’s possible to live without a pancreas, we cannot live without the function it holds, needing to replace its vital productions through medications and lifestyle adjustments as without it, life can get rather uncomfortable. This session will take a deeper look at the dual processes that the pancreas holds, considering what this committed and purposeful little organ might be saying to us about life and our experiences of anxiousness.

Session 3 | Consistency and Flow – What Might the Kidney Know? ~ 22 June

For such a small organ, our kidneys are incredibly important to the function of the body. From the removal of waste and fluids, blood pressure control, production of red blood cells and more, these twin organs pack quite a punch for something that is generally only 9-13cm long and 3-5 cm wide. Amongst many things that the kidney loves is consistency and flow, the flow of fluids in the body and consistency of blood pressure. By examining the role of the kidney in the body and the impact that stress and anxiety can have on its function we examine what wisdom the kidneys may hold when it comes to approaching the experiences of anxiousness in the body. We could all benefit from a little more flow and consistency in our lives, could we not?

Session 4 | Homo, Homeo and our inbuilt Romeo – Homeostasis and The Body ~ 29 June

One of the beauties of the body is that for the most part, it knows exactly what it’s doing.  Begging the question – if we got out of the way and simply attend to what the body communicated when it communicated it, would the chances of living a more vital life be increased? We live in a world filled with emotions, politics, cultural changes, and more all set amongst our daily responsibilities which can leave us feeling out of balance and anxious in the body. Despite all of this going on, our body still knows what it needs to do to bring us back into balance, activating what we could call our very own personal Romeo, inbuilt to serenade us back into harmony. This session will explore what we can learn from the body’s natural movements towards homeostasis in the context of anxiousness and the body, concluding this part of the course on a note of simplicity, order, and bodily poetics.
